LYFORD CAY FOUNDATIONS WRAPS UP A TRANSFORMATIVE SUMMER OF PROGRAMMING FOR BAHAMIAN STUDENTS
From Artificial Intelligence to Leadership and Trades, Students Explore Pathways to College, Career, and Community Impact
(NASSAU, BAHAMAS) – Lyford Cay Foundations (LCF) has concluded a transformative Summer 2025, marked by dynamic programmes that engaged hundreds of Bahamian students in hands-on learning, academic enrichment, career exploration, and leadership development.
Through its flagship initiatives, FOCUS Summer SLAM, On Course to College (OCTC), and the Family Island Leadership Programme (FILP), LCF advanced its mission of expanding opportunity and preparing the next generation of Bahamian leaders for success in higher education, the workplace, and civic life.
Exploring the Future through Artificial Intelligence – The six-week FOCUS Summer SLAM, held at the University of The Bahamas, introduced students in Grades 5–12 to the theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Participants explored AI as both a creative tool and a subject for ethical consideration, producing projects ranging from smart home prototypes to transportation solutions, while also strengthening core academic skills. Parents were invited to student showcases, performances, and open houses that highlighted both learning and personal growth.
Programme Director Kendra Moss said the engagement and confidence demonstrated by students reflects the deeper purpose of FOCUS: “Summer is always a busy time for the Foundation, but when we see the enthusiasm that FOCUS students bring each day, we know these investments are well worth it. The skills and confidence they are building will serve not only their families, but the wider community well into the future.”
Building Skills for Work and Life – Meanwhile, OCTC students spent four weeks at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), where they pursued practical training in computer programming, carpentry, beauty trades, and barbering. Students demonstrated their newfound skills at a showcase event for families, with projects such as handcrafted Adirondack chairs and digital coding applications underscoring the confidence and creativity that OCTC nurtures.
Parents applauded the opportunity. “My daughter normally takes business classes, but she has done a great job with carpentry. I am very impressed,” shared Alkeisha Edgecombe.
Leadership for Family Island Scholars – Rounding out the summer was the second year of the Family Island Leadership Programme, which brought 50 rising Grade 11 students from 14 Family Islands to New Providence for a week-long residential experience. Hosted at Breezes Resort Bahamas, with sessions at UB and BTVI, students engaged in college readiness workshops, leadership panels, career site visits, and cultural excursions. Supported by national leaders and industry experts, participants gained both skills and inspiration to chart their academic and professional journeys.
Executive Director Dr. Nicola Virgill-Rolle praised the achievements of students across the three programmes saying, “This summer reflects what is possible when young people are given access to opportunity, mentorship, and experiences that challenge them to think bigger. Whether through exploring artificial intelligence, mastering a trade, or preparing for leadership, our students are building skills that will benefit their families, communities, and the future of The Bahamas.”
Lyford Cay Foundations expressed gratitude to its institutional partners, including: the University of The Bahamas, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute, Breezes Resort Bahamas, as well as the many donors, parents, and community leaders whose support makes these initiatives possible.
All programmes are offered tuition-free, underscoring LCF’s commitment to ensuring that motivated Bahamian students of promise have the tools, networks, and encouragement needed to succeed.
