Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation Announces New Tim N. Unwin Memorial Scholarship for Specialised Legal Studies
(NASSAU, BAHAMAS) – The Lyford Cay Foundations are proud to announce the establishment of the Tim N. Unwin Memorial Scholarship for Specialised Legal Studies, created in memory of the late Timothy Unwin, former Chairman and long-standing Board Member of the Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation.
For nearly two decades, Tim Unwin’s leadership, vision and compassion profoundly influenced the work of the Foundations. A steadfast advocate for education and opportunity, he championed scholarship programmes that have empowered generations of Bahamians to pursue higher learning and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Beyond his service to the Foundations, Tim enjoyed a distinguished four-decade legal career with Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, where he helped lead the firm’s Finance, Securities and M&A practice to national prominence. His leadership extended internationally as he established the firm’s offices in London and New York, guiding major global transactions with professionalism and integrity.
Tim’s legacy of service also reached deep into philanthropy, including his tenure as Chairman of the Toronto Community Foundation, where he helped strengthen charitable initiatives across Canada. At Lyford Cay Foundations, he was instrumental in mobilising support following Hurricane Dorian and during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that Bahamians most in need received vital aid and relief.
The Tim N. Unwin Memorial Scholarship for Specialised Legal Studies will provide a CA$10,000 award to a Bahamian student pursuing postgraduate studies in arbitration, negotiation, or mediation. These are specialised fields that support The Bahamas’ growth as a regional centre for commercial law and dispute resolution. The programme was officially launched in late 2025, with scholarship applications opening on February 14, 2026 and the first award to be granted in August 2026.
“Tim Unwin was deeply committed to creating educational opportunities that shape lives and strengthen communities,” said Dr. Nicola Virgill-Rolle, Executive Director of Lyford Cay Foundations. “This scholarship honours his remarkable legacy by investing in the next generation of Bahamian legal professionals who will help advance the country’s capacity in arbitration and commercial law.”
The Unwin family continues to be an integral part of the Lyford Cay Foundations community. Through this scholarship, Tim’s dedication to mentorship, education and service will continue to inspire and uplift Bahamian students for years to come.
Lyford Cay Foundations remain dedicated to fostering excellence and expanding access to education for Bahamians across all disciplines. The establishment of this scholarship represents a continuation of the Foundations’ enduring mission to build a stronger, more resilient Bahamas through opportunity, education and service.
